Recruitment underway

Recruitment is underway for a wide range of positions at the new £80 million UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC).

The innovative facility will be located in Coventry and Warwickshire as part of the Government’s Faraday Battery Challenge – a £246 million commitment over the next four years on battery development.

A nationwide competition, which was led by the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) and supported by Innovate UK, to establish a new UK facility was won through a joint bid by WMG, at the University of Warwick, Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership and Coventry City Council.

The UKBIC, which is being led by newly appointed Managing Director Jeff Pratt, will deliver on the UK’s Industrial Strategy and develop the processes to transition the UK to become a global leader in design, development and manufacture of batteries through collaborative R&D between industry and academia.

The Centre, which will open in 2020, will see the development of the next generation of battery systems across battery chemistry, electrodes, cell design, module and pack processes technologies.

Recruitment for the first key technical positions has started with vacancies for engineers and process technicians.

Jeff Pratt, Managing Director of UKBIC, said: “This a great opportunity to be involved and play a significant role, from the start of our journey, working with industry to develop our future battery technology.

“We are keen to attract a diverse range of talent and believe that the technology and processes in UKBIC are similar to other manufacturing and process industries. Therefore, we are keen to talk, not only to battery experts, but to experts who have experience in related process and production technologies across other sectors, who would like to transfer their skills into battery process technology.”

Tony Harper, Industrial Strategy Challenge Director for the Faraday Battery Challenge at UK Research and Innovation, said: “UKBIC would be setting new standards in battery technology.

“This is a really innovative sector to be involved in and the recruitment process signals the start of this exciting project.

“The UKBIC will be instrumental in helping the UK realise its ambition to create a world-class battery industry at the cutting-edge of technology. For anyone with relevant skills and ambition, it represents an outstanding opportunity to develop their careers in a vital field for the future.”

This is the first phase of the technical recruitment and there will be more technology positions advertised by the end of the year, and through 2019.
