Process Engineer Production (6-month contract)
About the role:
As a Process Engineer, you will play a key role in supporting the industrialisation of automotive and energy storage batteries. Working as part of the Manufacturing Engineering team, you will be responsible for developing, validating, and optimising processes across the entire battery manufacturing value chain, including slurry mixing, electrode coating and drying, cell assembly, formation and testing, and module and pack build.
This role combines practical engineering, process optimisation, and problem-solving with hands-on exposure to pilot and production-scale equipment. You will ensure safe, efficient, repeatable manufacturing processes while contributing to technology scale-up, cost reduction, and sustainability improvements.
Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead and develop a team of process engineers in manufacturing development, covering all process streams (Electrode, Cell Assembly, FA&T, Module & Pack).
- Build capability in the team through mentoring, training, and promoting best practice in process engineering and industrialisation.
- Foster a collaborative, high-performance culture with a strong focus on safety, quality, and results.
Process Development & Industrialisation
- Lead the development, improvement, and validation of manufacturing processes, ensuring scalability, robustness, and efficiency.
- Drive new product introduction (NPI) initiatives for next-generation chemistries and materials, ensuring smooth transition into production.
- Design and execute experiments, trials, and feasibility studies to evaluate process concepts.
- Take ownership of technical documentation, including machine and process specifications, PFMEAs, control plans, BOMs, and process flow charts.
Problem Solving & Continuous Improvement
- Drive structured root cause analysis using process and equipment expertise, correlating with upstream and downstream process impacts.
- Analyse production and development data to improve uptime, availability, and reliability metrics (yield, OEE, cycle time, quality).
- Implement continuous improvement initiatives that enhance process capability, reduce cost, and improve sustainability.
Technology & CAPEX Delivery
- Lead CAPEX projects for new equipment acquisition, installation, and commissioning.
- Collaborate with vendors and suppliers to identify technical solutions, validate modifications, and implement process improvements.
- Ensure compliance with all health, safety, environmental, and quality standards in process development.
Key Interactions
- Reports directly to Head of Manufacturing Engineering
- Works closely with Operations, Product Engineering, and Electrochemistry teams
- Interfaces with Business Development and Project Delivery teams to align customer projects
- Collaborates with peers in Manufacturing Engineering and Advanced Technology teams
Knowledge skills and experience
Essential:
- Degree (or equivalent experience) in Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, Chemical, Material or Manufacturing Engineering.
- Proven experience leading engineering teams in process development or industrialisation.
- Strong knowledge of automation, mechanical, and control systems.
- Significant experience in process engineering within high-speed or advanced manufacturing (automotive, battery, or related industries).
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to interpret complex process and machine data.
- Excellent appreciation for HSE and quality systems.
Desirable:
- Experience across multiple battery manufacturing processes (Electrode, Cell Assembly, FA&T, Module & Pack).
- Hands-on experience with AutoCAD, Creo, or other design tools.
- Knowledge of PLCs, data acquisition systems, or advanced automation.
- Experience delivering CAPEX projects in manufacturing environments.
Personal Profile

- Confident, assertive, and self-assured leader.
- Resilient and enthusiastic, able to deliver results under pressure.
- Collaborative, with a positive and solution-oriented mindset.
- Strong communicator, capable of engaging both technical teams and external stakeholders.
- Innovative, persistent, and motivated to drive UKBIC’s mission of advancing battery manufacturing capability.
