Process Engineer Production (6-month contract)

About the role:

As a Process Engineer, you will play a key role in supporting the industrialisation of automotive and energy storage batteries. Working as part of the Manufacturing Engineering team, you will be responsible for developing, validating, and optimising processes across the entire battery manufacturing value chain, including slurry mixing, electrode coating and drying, cell assembly, formation and testing, and module and pack build.

This role combines practical engineering, process optimisation, and problem-solving with hands-on exposure to pilot and production-scale equipment. You will ensure safe, efficient, repeatable manufacturing processes while contributing to technology scale-up, cost reduction, and sustainability improvements.

Key Accountabilities and  Responsibilities

Process Development & Optimisation

  • Design, implement, and refine production processes across all streams (Mixing, Electrode, Cell Assembly, FA&T, Module & Pack).
  • Conduct trials, simulations, and process validations to establish robust, repeatable methods.
  • Analyse production metrics (yield, OEE, cycle time, defect rate) to identify bottlenecks and drive improvement.
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions, correlating with upstream and downstream processes.
  • Develop and maintain detailed documentation – SWI’s, PFMEAs, control plans, process flow charts, and specifications.

Equipment & Technology Integration

  • Commission and validate new equipment, or adapt existing equipment to prototype new methods.
  • Troubleshoot and recover processes via PLCs, HMIs, or tool management software.
  • Collaborate with vendors to resolve failures, implement design improvements, and validate modifications.
  • Assist in selecting, installing, and scaling new production equipment across all streams.

Manufacturing Support

  • Support daily industrialisation and production activities, ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and environmental standards.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to operations and process technicians.
  • Monitor process performance and recommend adjustments for improved throughput and cost-effectiveness.
  • Prepare technical reports, analyse trends, and summarise findings for both internal and customer-facing stakeholders.

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

  • Work cross-functionally with Advanced & Development Engineering, Operations, Quality, and HSE teams to integrate processes.
  • Lead small-scale experiments and pilot trials to test improvements before scaling.
  • Keep up to date with advances in battery manufacturing technologies and apply best practices.
  • Train colleagues and operators on process changes, ensuring knowledge transfer and capability building.

Key Interactions

  • You will have regular interactions with Advanced, Development functions as well as cross function departments in UKBIC.
  • You will be expected to help and support the Operations and wider UKBIC team.

Knowledge skills and experience

Essential:

  • Degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering.
  • Experience in high-volume manufacturing or advanced process engineering.
  • Hands-on exposure to one or more battery manufacturing processes (Mixing, Electrode, Cell Assembly, FA&T, Module/Pack).
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing fundamentals, SPC, lean principles, and quality systems.
  • Experience with equipment troubleshooting, data acquisition, and process optimisation.
  • Strong analytical, reporting, and problem-solving skills.

Desirable:

  • 5+ years relevant experience and degree.
  • Multi-stream exposure across all battery processes.
  • Familiarity with PLC controls, CAD tools, or automation systems.
  • Knowledge of battery-specific safety and compliance requirements.
  • Experience with Six Sigma, DOE, or advanced optimisation tools.

Personal Profile

Essential:

  • BSc in Mechanical, Chemical, Manufacturing or Industrial Engineering
  • Either a BS with 5+ years’ relevant experience or an MS in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, Process Engineering or equivalent.
  • The position will offer unique and complex engineering challenges that require persistence, innovative thinking and a positive attitude.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment.

Desirable:

  • Resilient, optimistic and open to change
  • Self-aware
  • Shows moral courage, openness and honesty in all dealings
  • Is confident, assertive and self-assured
  • Has an adult, collaborative approach to others
  • Self-motivated and able to work well under pressure
